Working out works out for most people because of technology – they’re eager and ready to use all the gadgets and gizmos that augment their exercise routine, so much so that they cannot wait to exercise. However, as with all things new, this shine on technology too fades away in time and exercise starts to look dreary and routine again; unless of course they keep investing in newer gadgets and workout toys. The key to making the best use of technology when it comes to getting and staying fit is to:
• Use what you have: There’s no use buying fitness equipment and gadgets if you’re going to use them as display objects or as passing fancies. When you put down hard-earned money to purchase a treadmill, a stationary bike or any other equipment, ensure that you get bang for your buck by putting them to good use. You feel much better every time you use the equipment, both physically and mentally. Not many people can afford a home gym or even a part of it, so count your blessings and start using them too.
• Don’t buy anything that you will not use regularly: When you buy stuff that you know you’ll never use, it’s a complete waste of money and space. Workout equipment and gadgets are not status symbols; they’re things that should enhance and complement your workout, not be the center of your boastful conversations or gather dust in your home.
• Buy what’s best for you: The equipment may be the best in the business, but it may not necessarily be the best for you. Invest in what suits your workout needs and what you’re comfortable with rather than going for the latest toy or the ones that all your friends have. If a plain old treadmill works wonders for you, don’t jump to buying the new all-in-one trainer that “promises” much but which you have never tried out for an extended period of time.
• Don’t forget the safety aspect: The more sophisticated the equipment, the less safe it is especially if you don’t know how to use it. Automation is a good thing, but if you’re not careful and don’t follow the right precautions, you could end up getting hurt quite badly. Even smaller gadgets like your iPod or other fancy gizmos that distract you when you’re jogging on a busy road are not safe if you don’t use them responsibly. So no matter what kind of technology you invest in, ensure that it doesn’t end up putting you out of action for any period of time.
• Don’t believe the hype: And finally, there’s no substitute to effort and consistency when it comes to exercise; so no matter what the promos scream, no matter what the ads claim, and no matter how good the models look, don’t ever believe that a piece of equipment is the magic pill that will help you lose weight overnight or in just a few days. The simple truth is that you don’t really need any kind of equipment or technology to exercise; will power, consistency and dedication are all it takes to gain good health and a great body.
